Bridge & Wolak
Ensemble
Michael Bridge (accordions & piano) and Kornel Wolak (clarinet & piano) are an internationally-acclaimed music & comedy duo, integrating traditional acoustic instruments with 21st-century digital technology. They perform their own uniquely re-imagined repertoire of classical, world and jazz fusion and can be heard regularly on CBC radio. With deft virtuosity and endless wit, Bridge & Wolak have been called the “Victor Borges of the 21st Century.” Fun-loving gentlemen (with seven degrees in music), they are both globe-trotting musicians and captivating educators.
Kornel Wolak is an internationally-renowned soloist, teacher and chamber musician; “Control and a smooth expressivity are what make Wolak shine” (Toronto Star). Dr. Wolak is on faculty teaching clarinet at Queen’s University and is also pioneering collaborative research in oral articulators with the department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto. His first book, Articulation Types for Clarinet, quickly became the new must-have book of 2018 for clarinetists and saxophonists.
Michael Bridge (accordions and piano) is a winner of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Medal and named one of CBC’s “30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30”. Active in new music, he has over 50 world premieres to his credit and tours extensively as an orchestral soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, and instructor. He is a doctoral candidate on accordion at the University of Toronto, studying with Joseph Macerollo.
Current touring projects include Bridge & Wolak: Bach to Benny Goodman, and their newest multimedia show for full orchestra + clarinet and accordion soloists, Tangorium, which pays homage to intimate Tango classics of the 1930s through Piazzolla’s Tango Nuevo, to epic symphonic-tangos that uniquely fuse the music of grandmasters like Bach & Beethoven with modern musical genres such as French Cabaret, Rock, Tango Club and even Heavy Metal.
