Praised as “a triumph of ensemble playing” by The New York Times and celebrated for its “blend of technical precision and scorching spontaneity” (The Strad), the Fry Street Quartet is a dynamic ensemble whose performances unite the enduring power of the string quartet tradition with an adventurous commitment to the music of our time. Equally at home with Beethoven and Bartók as with Gabriela Lena Frank, Clarice Assad, Laura Kaminsky, and other leading contemporary voices, the quartet has built an international reputation for programs that pair beloved masterworks with bold new artistic perspectives. Winners of the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Fry Street Quartet has performed from Carnegie Hall to London, Sarajevo, Jerusalem, and throughout the United States.

Over the past two decades, the quartet’s artistic life has expanded beyond the concert stage through collaborations that explore the relationships between music, science, ecology, and community. Their landmark project, Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project—created with physicist Dr. Robert Davies—was performed more than sixty times across the United States and internationally, weaving together chamber music, scientific inquiry, and storytelling to explore the relationships that shape our changing world. The project has been featured by The New York Times, NPR’s All Things Considered, Reuters, and Yale Climate Connections.

That spirit of inquiry continues to shape the quartet’s commissioning work. Recent collaborations include Laura Kaminsky’s Arboreal; Gabriela Lena Frank’s A Psalm of Disquiet; Nicolás Lell Benavides’ LEK, incorporating the recorded mating calls of sage grouse and sharp-tailed grouse; Akshaya Tucker’s Night Fire; Aida Shirazi’s They Need to Remember; Hitomi Oba’s Landing Steps,
Grounded Landings; and Aakash Mittal’s Living Memory | Sundarbans. Together these works reflect the ensemble’s enduring interest in music that responds to the ecological and cultural questions shaping our world.

Current projects include the quartet’s documentary film, LEK: Listening at the Edge, which explores the wonder and fragility of the endangered sage grouse through music-making at the intersection of art, science, and place. This season also includes a new version of Aakash Mittal’s Living Memory | Sundarbans, the video release of the Quaking Aspen movement from Laura Kaminsky’s Arboreal, and a featured appearance performing original music by Kaminsky in an episode of Poetry in America devoted to poet May Swensen.

Known for imaginative programming, the Fry Street Quartet has presented complete cycles of Bartók’s string quartets for both the NOVA Chamber Music Series and Utah State University. During the 2027–28 season, the ensemble will perform all five of Beethoven’s late quartets in a season-long cycle. Beyond the recital hall, the quartet premiered Laura Kaminsky’s acclaimed opera As One with Sasha Cooke and Kelly Markgraf at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and also performed it at Hawaii Opera Theatre, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and Chautauqua Opera. The quartet’s recordings include The Crossroads Project (Navona Records), As One (Albany Records), and Clarice Assad’s Canções da América (Guarneri Hall). Their forthcoming recording, Listening to the
Living World, brings together four works written for the ensemble that explore humanity’s
relationship with the more-than-human world.

The Fry Street Quartet performs on a distinguished collection of fine Italian instruments on loan from a private foundation, including violins by J. B. Guadagnini and Pietro Giacomo Rogeri, a viola by Giovanni Battista Rogeri, and a cello by Andrea Guarneri.

As Quartet-in-Residence at Utah State University’s Caine School of the Arts, where they hold the Dan C. and Manon Caine Russell Endowed String Quartet Residency, the Fry Street Quartet continues to cultivate the next generation of musicians while deepening a musical life rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and connection.
