Beauty Has No Borders is a new work for piano, strings, and percussion that celebrates jazz as one of America’s most transformative and enduring art forms. Inspired by the visionary composers and performers who expanded the boundaries of jazz, the piece explores a musical landscape where tradition and innovation, composition and improvisation, and popular and classical influences exist in constant dialogue.

Drawing inspiration from the golden era of jazz piano—from the dazzling virtuosity and crystalline precision of Art Tatum to the sweeping romanticism and genre-defying artistry of George Gershwin—Clarice Assad’s composition honors the artists who demonstrated that great music transcends categories and conventions.

Through a vibrant interplay between piano, strings, and percussion, Beauty Has No Borders reflects the expansive spirit of jazz: a music shaped by many voices, cultures, and traditions, yet united by a shared pursuit of expression and imagination. The work celebrates the artists who have continuously challenged boundaries and reminds us that beauty, creativity, and human connection have no limits.

The premiere performance will feature pianist Lara Downes as soloist.
